Indian General Election
• Voting: Over five stages - April 20, 22, 26 and May 5 and 10 - because of logistics and need to deploy security personnel. Voting is not compulsory. • For the first time, electronic voting machines will be used across the nation. There will be more than 700,000 polling stations. • Results: Counting for all states is on May 13, with a final tally - first past the post - expected the same day. • Parliament: 545 seats, of which 543 will go to the polls and two are appointed by the president. New parliament must be in place by August 6.
