GE chief defends overseas outsourcing (Boston.com, MA)
General Electric chief executive Jeffrey Immelt defended his company's outsourcing of some jobs overseas Wednesday, saying such moves were part of doing business in a global economy. "Half of our sales are outside the United States," he said shortly before the start of the company's annual meeting. "If you want to sell in places like China, India and Europe you've got to employ people there. GE is a global company."
UN Security Council moves to keep terrorists away from WMD (Channel News Asia, Singapore)
The UN Security Council unanimously passed a resolution aimed at keeping nuclear, biological and chemical weapons out of the hands of terrorists. The resolution calls on the 191 UN member nations to stop terrorists, black market traders and all so-called "non-state actors" from acquiring such weapons or the materials and technology to make or deliver them....

International efforts on to extend peace initiative to Siachen (PakTribune.com, Pakistan)
With the thaw in Indo-Pak relations, there is an international effort to extend the peace intiative to Siachen by demilitarising it to study the impact of changing climate and human intervention on the biggest glacier in the Himalayan ranges. Former US Ambassador to India Harry Barnes is working on an intiative to convert Siachen, the world's highest battlefield, into a peace zone and involve Indian, Pakistani and American scientists to study the environmental impact on it, according to Prof S I Hasnain, Vice Chancellor of Calicut University and the country's top expert on glaciers, according to PTI.

Exit polls boost Cong, Left in Kerala (Times of India)
The exit poll claims of a possible hung Parliament has provided a booster to the Left Front and Congress, two major rivals of Kerala politics. Earlier the Congress as well as CPM had rejected the poll surveys that had given the NDA a clear lead. "We do not believe in such surveys", declared the Left Democratic Front (LDF) convenor Paloli Mohammed Kutty when media drew his attention to the poll surveys.

Voting: Over five stages - April 20, 22, 26 and May 5 and 10 - because of logistics and need to deploy security personnel. Voting is not compulsory.
For the first time, electronic voting machines will be used across the nation. There will be more than 700,000 polling stations.
Results: Counting for all states is on May 13, with a final tally - first past the post - expected the same day.
Parliament: 545 seats, of which 543 will go to the polls and two are appointed by the president. New parliament must be in place by August 6.

India, Pakistan set final clash in junior Asia Cup (Outlook India)
While Pakistan were emphatic in their 5-2 defeat of Malaysia, India had a hard time beating South Korea 4-3 in the second semifinal that was decided on penalty strokes. The final, which is set for Thursday, will be the first clash between the traditional rivals on Pakistani soil in five years. With the victories, both India and Pakistan secured berths in next year's junior World Cup to be played in Amstelveen, Netherlands.
No pension for banned Azharuddin (The Star, Malaysia)
Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin, banned for life for involvement in match-fixing, has been left out of a pension scheme for the countrys Test players. The plan, under which 174 Test players and umpires will receive 5,000 rupees (US$113.2) per month, was announced as part of the Indias national cricket boards 75th anniversary celebrations.

Actress Soundarya who had acted in two successful Malayalam films Kilichundan Maambazam and Yaathrakarude Shraddhayku was killed in a plane crash on Saturday. She was 32. Among the three others who were killed was a Malayali pilot ,a 28 year old Joy Philip, Sundarya brother Amarnath Shetty (aged 34) and a BJP party worker Ramesh Kadam (aged 30). The accident had taken place at 11.10 AM on Saturday.
